about

The fifth track of 'Black Lives Matter' - a collaboration between Norwich-based trumpeter Chris Dowding and artist Laure Van Minden.

'Trayvon Martin' uses the alphabet system that I use (invented by Devon-based composer Hugh Nankivell) in various ways - the laptop synth line that opens the track plays the name throughout. The bass synth that comes in afterwards picks out notes of the name, changing the harmony as it holds notes beneath the shifting lines above.

Finally, another layer of trumpet with keyboard plays Trayvon's name slow over the top...

Chris:

"Feels like quite a physical process using Ableton Live - I kind of feel like I’m wrestling with it, to get the sound out I want..! Kind of challenging but fun..!"

Laure:

"I love how superimposing the photo and the drawing somehow creates a new energy... I like them both Chris thank you!"
