about

The fourteenth track of the 'Black Lives Matter' project - a collaboration between Norwich-based trumpeter Chris Dowding and artist Laure Van Minden.

I wanted, again, to show the innocence of a 12-year-old victim. I think this comes through in the simplicity of the track. Laure's artwork used handprints, reflected in trumpet melodies recorded on a dictaphone, spelling out details of the case in translated phrases.

A trumpet played through through a harmoniser pedal solos throughout the track, underpinned by laptop synth chords, and in the end all that's left are fading remains of the looping behind...

Laure:

"I wanted to use my hand and do imprints... first bloody then overlaid white ones... It actually turned grey which I thought summarised the in-between state we fall into when we want to but cannot decide or commit ourselves to act... and also mark the innocence of childhood coming to an abrupt stop."

Laure:

"[the digital cover is] also so powerful without the photo for Tamir..."
